ViewSonic (PX748-4K) 4K UHD Projector Review of Features & Performance

Finding an affordable projector for a multi-purpose home entertainment center can be a challenge. In this ViewSonic (PX748-4K) review, we’ll look at an option that has the versatility and advanced technology to excel in a wide range of spaces and situations. With its powerful lamp, sharp 4K resolution, and super-low input lag, there’s a lot to love about the ViewSonic PX748. Let’s take a closer look at the details so you can decide if it’s an ideal fit for your home. (>>> Check on Amazon).

Space and Set-Up

The 4,000-lumen lamp of the ViewSonic PX748 has the power to compete with any indoor ambient light level, without losing clarity or saturation in the image. Now you will still need a fairly large space to get a big screen since it uses a standard-throw lens. For a 100” image, you’ll need around 9 feet of distance between the wall and screen. That’s doable in most living rooms, game rooms, and other spaces, however, and it at the least doesn’t need a dedicated, light-controlled home theater space.

Because of its long throw, most users will want to ceiling-mount the PX748, and it’s lightweight and compact enough to fit standard projector mounts. Its image adjustment features are fairly standard, with a 1.3x zoom and 2D keystone correction, with a warping tool for getting squared, accurate images even on irregular surfaces. Your projector mount placement will still need to be precise, with no lens shift or similar features to fix errors in alignment, but it’s relatively flexible for those with oddly-shaped or otherwise complicated viewing areas.

Picture Quality

This is where the PX748 is the most impressive. It uses a DLP display with XPR technology for sharp, true 4K resolution. This sharpness and accuracy is enhanced by its support for HLG and HDR technology. The frame refresh rate is on par with the top performers in the home theater space, at 240Hz, so that clarity is maintained even when you’re watching sports or other fast-paced content.

ViewSonic’s proprietary SuperColor technology is used on the PX748, as well. Thanks to this, it has a broader color gamut than most projectors at a similar price point, and can maintain those same vibrant colors in any light level.

Connectivity

The ViewSonic PX748 is best used with wired content sources. It has dual HDMI ports, along with two USB ports for peripherals, but lacks the integrated streaming platforms and other wireless content options you’ll find on many modern projectors. It does have network hookups for LAN-based home automation systems, but isn’t the best choice for use in Alexa or Google Assistant based smart home entertainment set-ups.

Gaming Performance

Along with its 240Hz refresh rate, the ViewSonic PX748 has a measured input lag as low as 4.2ms. That’s as close to instant as you’ll find in a home theater projector, and is low enough to satisfy even competitive online gamers. It’s ideal for console gaming, with a USB-C input for devices like the Nintendo Switch, which it can charge while you’re playing.

Speakers

The 10-watt speaker built in to the PX748 is acceptable, if not exceptional. It’s loud and clear enough you can use it to watch TV or play games without external sound sources, with a sound quality similar to what you’d expect from most flatscreen TVs. Most home theater users will want to pair it with a soundbar or sound system, especially if you’re looking for an immersive soundscape or surround sound experience, which the speakers on this projector simply aren’t equipped to do.

Pros & Cons

With an MSRP of around $1,050, the ViewSonic PX748 is a very reasonably priced 4K projector, and an excellent value once you consider the bright lamp and low lag, a combination of features that’s rare in this price point. That said, it does have its limitations. Its lack of wireless connectivity could be an issue in modern home entertainment set-ups, while its longer throw distance limits its use in smaller spaces. For many users, however, its responsiveness and picture quality make it a very attractive option.(>>> Find on B&HPhotoVideo)
